In Ireland, levothyroxine (T4) is one of the most frequently prescribed medicines on the community drug schemes. Levothyroxine (T4) is prescribed to treat under active thyroid (medically known as hypothyroidism) in clinical practice. An underactive thyroid can commonly be mistaken for signs of aging. The symptoms of an underactive thyroid include:
• weight gain
• being sensitive to the cold
• dry skin and hair
• muscle aches
• cardiovascular effects, including high blood pressure
Hypothyroidism results from a hormone deficiency, called thyroxine which is produced by the thyroid. When your thyroid reduces the amount of thyroxine produced, it leads to less energy being used and thus your body functions slow down.
An underactive thyroid can be both prevented and treated. There are two main causes for hypothyroidism;
1. Immune system attacks your thyroid.
2. A damaged thyroid.
People can show signs of an underactive thyroid for years without being diagnosed. The only way to test for problems with your thyroid is by assessing hormone levels taken through a blood test. Hypothyroidism can affect anyone but it is more common amongst women over 50. It is reported that it affects 15 in 1000 women and 1 in 1000 men.
An underactive thyroid is not usually a serious condition and can be easily treated with hormone supplements. However, if left untreated it can lead to lead to complications such as; swelling of the thyroid, heart disease, mental health issues and infertility.
